Since 1895, Shinko Kiln has been crafting Mino ware in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture — one of Japan's storied ceramics regions. Now led by fifth-generation owner Kazuaki Tanaka, the kiln blends generations of technique with a modern eye, shaping pieces built for everyday use and lasting design.

This matcha bowl is defined by yohen (窯変) — the kiln transformation that occurs when flame and glaze interact unpredictably during firing. The result is one-of-a-kind color: flowing gradients, blended hues, shifting depth and shadow, each bowl capturing its own fleeting moment. No two bowls are alike, and each one carries its own quiet story. Mix sizes for rhythm, or choose a colorway to match someone's taste — it makes a thoughtful, considered gift.

Details

  • Diameter: approx. 10 cm; Height: approx. 6.5 cm
  • Comes in a paper gift box
  • Handmade — slight variation in size and color is normal and expected
  • As a result of natural materials and the firing process, pieces may show iron specks, pinholes, glaze unevenness, or slight warping/imbalance — these are natural characteristics of handmade ware, not defects

Care and Quality Note

Because this is a completely handmade piece by a traditional craftsman, please note the following: Unique Expression — every bowl varies in size, color, pattern, and glaze expression; cherish these differences as its personality. Living with the Ware — soil and glazes were chosen for soft, organic textures; over time the surface develops character, including fine crazing (kannyu) and subtle stains.

Care Instructions — not suitable for direct fire, microwave, oven, dishwasher, or dish dryer; wash gently by hand; avoid leaving liquid or food inside for extended periods; not recommended for highly oily or strong-smelling foods.
